In Argavand and Geghanist villages of Armenia’s Ararat region, youth took an active role in unlocking local assets to develop rural tourism through the “Tourism Development in Rural Communities” project.
Under the guidance of volunteer trainers, they identified and mapped the natural, cultural, and human assets of their communities. Based on this, they co-designed a local tour package and later conducted an experimental tour, applying their newly gained knowledge as guides. This hands-on experience gave them confidence and demonstrated the economic potential of rural tourism.
At the project’s conclusion, participants received certificates for their contribution, while trainers were recognized for voluntarily supporting community-based learning and youth empowerment.
This initiative—jointly developed by ArmeniaCorps participants from Argavand and Geghanist—was implemented within the ArmeniaCorps Development Initiative and funded by the Cultural Vistas Muskie Alumni Small Grants Program.
By building on existing strengths and fostering youth engagement in local economic development, the project contributed directly to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
Through asset-based development and skills training in tourism, young people became drivers of sustainable livelihoods, showcasing how rural communities can lead their own path to inclusive and resilient growth.
