We are proud to introduce the “Tourism Development in Rural Communities” project—an inspiring example of youth-led innovation that emerged from the ArmeniaCorps Development Initiative. This collaborative effort was created by three young women who met through ArmeniaCorps and transformed their shared experiences into a vision for rural prosperity.
Rooted in the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach, the project harnesses the local knowledge and cultural heritage of Argavand and Geghanist villages. Its core mission is to equip rural youth with the tools and confidence to design and promote tourism experiences—including classical, experiential, adventure, and agritourism models—that celebrate the unique identity of their communities.
This initiative directly contributes to SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by promoting sustainable livelihoods and local entrepreneurship through tourism.
Funded through the Cultural Vistas Muskie Alumni Small Grant Program, the project delivers a series of hands-on workshops that bring together 12 motivated youth per session to develop engaging tour packages that reflect their village’s unique story.
As a practical extension of their learning, participants will also lead guided tours of Argavand and Geghanist, giving them firsthand experience in hosting and storytelling—while building community pride and economic opportunity.
By activating local talent and celebrating village assets, “Tourism Development in Rural Communities” exemplifies how youth can catalyze sustainable, place-based development—turning small ideas into lasting impact.
